What's New With Linkin Park?

October 4, 2015

Linkin Park is taking some time off before their next scheduled tour date in the United States. Tickets are on sale now for Linkin Park at the Tempe Beach Park in Tempe, Arizona November 1, 2015. The band just wrapped up the European leg of its tour on September 6, in Rome, Italy, after touring China, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Russia, and Finland during the summer. The tour began in North America during winter 2015, and features guest bands Rise Against and Of Mice, and Men. Earlier this year Linkin Park reimbursed ticket holders for some of its initial American show dates. Lead singer Chester Bennington became debilitated by a leg injury, which forced the Hunting Party tour to cancel in Los Angeles up until Valentine’s Day, February 14.

Linkin Park, originally from Agora Hills, California, is often called one of the music industry’s last famous rock bands, and on September 28, 2015 the band celebrated the 15-year anniversary of the release of its first single One Step Closer. Band members Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, and Rob Bourdon, were all friends in high school when they decided to form the band in 1996. Their very first album Hybrid Theory became a multi-platinum success, followed up by their second studio album Meteora in 2003, which penetrated the top of the Billboard Music charts.

Hunting Party is their 6th and most recent studio album, released on Warner Bros. and Machine Shop on June 13, 2014, their last record Living Things was released in 2012. Hunting Party is said to focus on its rock music sound as opposed to electronic. This album marks the first time the band has ever collaborated in the studio with other artists, the likes of which include, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down, Helmet, Rakim, and others. 5 singles were released from the album including Guilty All the Same, Until It’s Gone, Wastelands, Rebellion, and Final Masquerade in June 2014. It debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200. Mike Shinoda has recently said that the band is working on a new album that should see release in 2016. This next album will be Linkin Park’s 7th studio album, and according to some reports will be a back-to-their-roots affair. It is rumored that the band will subsequently launch a worldwide tour at the end of 2016, to support the new album.

Over the past 15 years Linkin Park has sold over 60 million records and has toured steadily in 2013 and 2014 in Europe, Japan, and the US., still the band devotes a significant amount of time developing and investing in alternate businesses that they feel are necessary to support its income. Linkin Park as well as other artists, have seen a decline in earnings. Revenue from singles has faltered and musicians are undercut from entities such as online streaming services, making it necessary for bands to re-think the way they earn income. They have recently launched a Venture Capital firm in May 2015, called Machine Shop Ventures. Some of Machine Shop’s previous investments include, a ride-sharing platform called Lyft, Robinhood a free-trading app, and Shyp, a shipping app founded by Kevin Gibbon. Machine Shop was formed in 1999, as an invention company. The business uses an agency model that focuses on partnerships, merchandising, videos, and venture capital, investing primarily in tech companies. Last year Linkin Park parted ways with its professional management, opting instead to use its own in-house corporate management team of ‘talented businesspersons.’ At the same time, The Collective, their ex-management firm, who handles Slash, Godsmack, Stained, and Kelly Rowland announced that it would be closing down its management business.

With all this going on, the members of Linkin Park still find the time for their individual side projects. Mike Shinoda recently performed material from his solo effort and side band Fort Minor to a sold out crowd in London UK, for the first time in over 10 years. Lead singer Chester Bennington’s band Dead by Sunrise, whose members include Chester Bennington, Amir Derakh, Ryan Shuck, Brandon Belsky, Elias Andra, and Anthony "Fu" Valcic from Julien-K and Orgy, debuted an album in 2009, called Out of Ashes. Ryan Shuck has stated in an interview for a German publication, that the next Dead by Sunrise album is in the works and will be more raw and emotional with a sound that is less produced. Confirmations on the release date are still pending. Joe Haun, Linkin Park turntablist, and who has directed several of the band’s music videos, debuted his first feature film last year at Comic Con. Mall is based on the novel written by Eric Bogosian. The film script was co-written and produced by Vincent D'Onofrio, most known for his portrayal of detective Bobby Goren on Law & Order Criminal Intent, and stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Gina Gershon.
